The contribution of volunteers is vital to Core's success. Volunteers choose from a range of roles including artistic or technical support, maintaining a safe and welcoming environment in the front-of-house area, or just being a friendly face to provide encouragement. Volunteers come from a range of backgrounds, from the local community and further afield, and many have experienced mental health problems first-hand.

Volunteers may want to gain work experience in a particular environment, may be students on arts or community courses, or sometimes just want to get involved in something. Volunteers work closely with our members, often providing one-to-one support in creative activities and motivating and assisting members in what they want to do. They also bring technical and practical assistance to the workshop sessions and to the studios. Volunteers have helped us diversify our workshop programme and meet the demands of our members.

In return there are opportunities for volunteers to develop their skills in tutoring, administration and reception work. They also get the chance to participate in external events, perform at gigs, exhibit artwork and develop their skills in workshops. New opportunities open up for many volunteers as a result of their experience at Core.
