BASIC MUSIC SKILLS TUTOR
DAYS/HOURS OF Tuesday
WORK 11am – 1.30pm
TIME COMMITMENT 3 months (renewable)

SALARY £21 per hour
MAJOR OBJECTIVE OF TASK/PROJECT
To creatively lead members within a group workshop covering the fundamentals of music,
composition and theory
Elements: include, rhythm, melody, scales, harmony & chords, structure & arrangement
Skills: including keeping in time, playing together, taking a lead & improvising
TUTOR RESPONSIBILITIES
• To create and co-ordinate innovative focussed workshops with direct relevance to current musicology and performance genres
• To teach members about individual elements of music and how music 'works'
• To prepare members in creating their own music at whatever level they can; eventually to work independently on their own musical projects
• To provide opportunities for members to come together for a common purpose of learning about
and making music
• To keep the studio and general music area tidy, leads, guitars, chairs etc. to be put away when not in use.
• To trouble shoot by responding to breakages, repairing where possible and notifying the co-ordinator
• To offer assistance for members dealing with equipment / technical problems
•
To motivate members to make the most of the opportunities within the music department
•
To be able to create a non-stressful working atmosphere and solve problems as they occur
• To contribute and attend music department meetings as requested
•
To actively promote and support Core Arts gigs
•
To have a sympathetic yet realistic understanding of the needs of members who experience
mental health problems
•
To communicate with the co-ordinator and other tutors about daily duties
GENERAL DUTIES

To ensure that basic Health and Safety procedures are followed within the department
•
To be punctual, committed and professional within approach
•
To work within an equal opportunities framework and observe the Core Arts code of respect
•
To follow Core Arts policies and procedure
SKILLS & ABILITIES, QUALIFICATIONS
• (QTLS) Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills Status or PGCE or working towards achieving the above qualifications
• Musician skilled in at least 3 instruments with the ability to lead creative sessions offering clear direction, support involvement and input
• Skilled in all aspects of music theory to a minimum of grade 5
•
Knowledge of composition and improvisation
• Intermediate knowledge and understanding of sound engineering, production and all aspects
of the recording process
• Able to create and facilitate a multi skilled workshop with relevant aims and objectives
• Able to work creatively and productively with a wide range of people
• Able to motivate people, especially those who have little confidence or positive self image
• Able to communicate effectively
• Able to instil confidence in others
TRAINING
• To participate in support/information meetings and one to one supervision meetings
• Attend relevant training courses/workshops
SUPERVISION
• Direct supervision will be given by the Music Co-Ordinator in 6 week intervals

CREATIVE MUSIC SKILLS TUTOR

To creatively lead members within a workshop format, to realise and develop their musical expression and output.
Plan and deliver creative project outlines that are fully inclusive. Demonstrate and teach vocal techniques, harmony and recording procedure.
TUTOR RESPONSIBILITIES

To aim to produce fully mastered recordings and performances at the end of each individual creative project
•
To combine/hold vocal training workshops as part of the creative process
•

FRONT OF HOUSE VOLUNTEERS
Core Arts currently needs Front of House Volunteers to sit at the front desk and be a friendly face to all who come to the centre.
You will have the responsibility to make sure members feel connected with the service and direct any enquiries to the relevant person/department. Added to this, you may also be asked to do some admin work as and when required.
VOLUNTEER EXCHANGE SCHEME
Be part of a highly creative centre for the arts supporting those experiencing mental illness in Hackney. Volunteer at our Front of House for 2 shifts (lasting 2/2.5 hrs per shift) and you will have open access to 1 class at the centre in return each week*. As a F.O.H. volunteer you must be a friendly and welcoming face to visitors. You will be expected to be punctual and undertake any admin duties when required. Full training is given and there is a degree of flexibility in scheduling shifts. In return you have access to wide range of classes: pottery, life drawing, guitar/drum/singing lessons, poetry and creative writing etc.

Experience / skills required: Good communication skills and a friendly approachable manner essential. Experience of working with adult mental health service users would be useful.
