Percussion              

Venue: Studio 1
Time: 2pm – 5pm every Thursday

COURSE OUTLINE
Group sessions (individual time can be set aside if people require it).
• To create and participate in a percussion ensemble.
• Learn rhythms from Africa, Cuba and the Caribbean etc…
• To understand rhythm, hand drumming styles and techniques.
• To create and arrange original rhythmic ensemble pieces.

The workshops offer participants the opportunity to develop the following:
• Working as part of a team
• Learning set parts
• Rhythmic understanding and dynamics
• Rhythm reading skills
• Understanding different time signatures
• Creativity towards rhythm and music
• Orchestration and arranging skills
• Directing skills
• Improvisation skills
• Communication and listening
• Confidence
• Live performance

AIMS & OBJECTIVES
Educational: to learn specific rhythmic parts that create a percussion ensemble, to understand the cultural context and importance of percussion ensembles and it’s relation to understanding rhythm and its musical contribution.
Technical: to develop hand drumming techniques. To develop an awareness of how to use the hands and body correctly when playing hand drums including awareness of posture, hand positioning and repetition.
Artistic: to create arrangements of Afro-Cuban, Caribbean and African rhythms, to work as a team to create original rhythmic pieces and to work towards performance.
Social: Learning to work as a group, learning the role of each part in a rhythm ensemble in relation to its contribution to the group as a whole. Developing confidence towards individual expression and creativity in a rhythmic context and soloing within the group and in performance. Developing team skills and confidence in working in a creative environment.

SESSION OUTLINE
During the 4 hours; at least 2 hours is set aside for ensemble practice, this includes learning and practicing new material and refreshing arrangements and rhythms previously learnt. At least 1 hour per session will include learning parts to new rhythms.
In addition 1 hour set aside towards creative rhythmic expression, this is led by the participants’ creative contributions and developed in situ, either as a response to stimuli or individual contribution.
Participants are encouraged to work together according to their previous experience and ability, if any.
The sessions are designed to be fun and inclusive to all members, whilst at the same time they are designed to challenge beginners and more experienced players with a view to stimulate creative rhythmic understanding and expression.

• Development of musicianship within an ensemble.
• Development of the application of rhythms learnt in other musical contexts.
• Improve communication skills on a musical and social level.
• Improve listening skills.
• Improve confidence in own ability to play, create, learn and perform.
• Development of a percussive awareness in other musical settings.

SOME PROGRESSION ROUTES
• Participating in Jam Sessions.
• Performing at Core Arts gigs.
• Recording the ensemble for future gigs outside of Core.
• Recording an E.P. to raise money for instruments.
• Further study outside of Core Arts.
• Volunteering; teaching parts and helping other members.
