OUTLINE
A mixed ability oil painting group. Members will work directly from observation with a variety of motifs including still life, portrait and landscape. The emphasis will be on in class studies and tutorials which inform member's personal painting practice. Members are encouraged to bring in their ongoing work for discussion.
Elements: Extensive study of the materials and techniques of oil painting with demonstrations and relevant examples from art history.
Skills Taught: Development of oil painting through in class exercises and one-to-one tutorials.
AIMS & OBJECTIVES
Educational: Members will explore a variety of approaches and techniques to discover those which are most applicable to their own interests.
Technical: To gain an understanding of the basic principles of oil painting. Students will explore colour, tonality, composition, rigid and flexible supports, various methods of surface preparation and paint handling.
Materials: Oil paint, charcoal, graphite, brushes, canvas, panel and a variety of paint mediums.
Social: Students will be encouraged to create together and share ideas in a supportive environment. In class exercises and tutorials will increase knowledge and confidence in ones own oil painting abilities.
SESSION OUTLINE
Teaching will include demonstrations, one to one tutorials and discussion of various examples from the history of painting. Students are encouraged to bring in their own work for discussion and feedback. Periodic reviews will chart the direction of individual members work.
OUTCOMES
• Members will be able to produce fully resolved paintings from observation.
• Confidence in working with oil paint
• Increased knowledge of the properties and uses of oil paint
• Improved observational skills
