OUTLINE
A mixed ability group, which draws from the complex subject of
the human form using a combination of short poses and extended studies.
Elements: contextual studies with an understanding of
the significance of life drawing and painting within art history.
Skills taught: development of artistic skills through
experimentation and observation.
AIMS & OBJECTIVES
Educational: to learn how to represent the human form two dimensionally.
Technical: to understand the nature of different art
materials, perspective, foreshortening, proportion, knowledge of anatomy,
observation skills, eye-to-hand technique, use of chiaroscuro, negative
space, composition, mark making and use of line, texture, colour knowledge,
experimentation.
Materials: Pencil, charcoal, pastels, inks, oil paint,
acrylic paint, paper, board, canvas, monoprints, and collage.
Artistic: to utilise and to expand upon current palette
by understanding the various options available in representing the human
form.
Social: a time where students can expand creative ideas
together. Developing and working on creative observation from using
the same model. To help and support other members of the group in their
ideas and creativity. To learn how to work and communicate within a team
and share artistic knowledge. To learn how to participate in group criticism
and feedback sessions.
SESSION OUTLINE
This workshop is an opportunity to learn how to represent the
human form. Teaching will be a combination of demonstration and one to
one teaching focussed around the life models’ poses. The emphasis
will be on positive encouragement and feedback, to encourage creative
work.
First stage: teaching basic drawing and observation
of the model.
Second stage: students will cover basic materials and
different techniques used to represent the figure. Both contemporary methods
and historical styles.
Third stage: this will develop the students understanding
of perspective proportion, foreshortening, knowledge of anatomy.
Final stage: exhibiting and learning to price work for
sale.
Contextual Studies: Throughout all the stages the student
will learn about the history and significance of life drawing and life
painting within art.
OUTCOMES
• Members are able to produce well-observed and constructed
life drawings and life paintings.
• Confidence in representing the naked human form
and understanding of anatomy, perspective foreshortening and proportion.
• Confidence in working with different materials.
• Focusing skills improved.
• Hand to eye skills improved.
• Creative thinking enhanced.

life drawings and paintings inside and outside of Core Arts.
• Volunteering to help set up the class and help
with tutorials.
