COURSE OUTLINE
Learning basic gardening techniques through practical experience.
AIMS & OBJECTIVES
Educational: to learn basic gardening techniques including maintenance, planting & harvesting
Social/personal: working together as a group
Health: physical outdoor exercise
SESSION OUTLINE
Sessions take place in the Core Arts garden, vegetable garden or the hospital gardens.
Through the maintenance and development of these gardens the following techniques are learnt: weeding, watering, mulching, digging, tidying, planting, pruning, and propagation.
Health and safety issues and awareness are an integral part of each session.
OUTCOMES
• Confidence in carrying out various aspects of gardening
• Work experience fulfiling a maintenance contract with the hospital
• A sense of job satisfaction and pride in the results of the work
• Improvement of the local environment
SOME PROGRESSION ROUTES
• Studying for NVQ in association with Lee House/Capel Manor
• Employment: possibility of regular maintenance work within the hospital, and other contracts
