OUTLINE
Group session covering pottery and ceramics skills, ranging from
design, glazing and firing through to exhibiting and sales.
Elements: technical understanding of the design preparation
process;
• Preparation of clay and development of design
• Different clay usage
• Biscuit firing
• Glazing process and understanding of how glazes behave
• Use of different source materials for ideas.
Skills Taught: design, wedging, coiling, slabbing, using moulds, pinching, throwing, glazing, coloured stains, firing, exhibiting and sales.
AIMS & OBJECTIVES
Educational: to learn how to design, prepare and develop and
idea for work in three dimensions. To work in three dimension.
Technical: To understand the nature of clay. To utilise
technology of firing and glazing and understand the basic technical concepts
of how ceramics work from the raw stage to the fired finished product.
Artistic: to utilise modern technology to create pottery
and ceramics and to expand upon current palette by understanding the various
options available.
Social: A socialising time where students can help
each other and expand creative ideas together;
Developing and working on creative themes.
To help and support other members of the group in their ideas and creativity,
learn how to work and communicate within a team and share artistic knowledge.
SESSION OUTLINE
This workshop is an opportunity to learn how to make pots, plates,
tiles, sculpted artworks. Teaching will be a combination of demonstration
and one to one teaching. The emphasis will be on positive encouragement
and feedback, to encourage creative work. A variety of source materials
will be used from books, and through visiting exhibitions.
First stage: teaching basic design for 3D projects.
Second stage: students will cover basic techniques pinching,
slabbing, coiling, and using moulds. The students will be taught how to
join clay, roll clay, and make impressions and textures.
Third stage: how to use buff Stoneware clay and Terracotta
Earthenware clay. Using coloured stains to decorate raw ware and coloured
and clear glazes to use on fired ware.
Fourth stage: how to fill and use a kiln. By this stage
students will be able to choose a shape and decide which method to use
to make it.
Fifth stage: working on own projects, exhibiting and
learning to price work for sale.
