Botanical Drawing              

Venue: Core Garden / Art Studio
Time: 11:00am – 1:00pm every Tuesday

COURSE OUTLINE
This course is an introduction to drawing and painting flowers and plants. Plant portraits are created using different media such as coloured pencils, pen and ink and watercolour.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES
Artistic:
• To develop observational skills
• To record botanic observations
• To develop drawing and painting skills using a variety of media
Educational:
• To study botanic detail
• To gain a deeper understanding of plant anatomy and plant forms

SESSION OUTLINE
The course is designed as an ongoing, once weekly session for 2 hours per week. Sessions will be held in the garden as well as the studio. Botanical material such as flowers, foliage, seeds and berries will be used according to seasonal availability. There will be visits to gardens such as Kew to observe and sketch in the gardens (weather permitting).
Different materials and techniques will be covered including pen and ink, colour wash, coloured pencils or pastels. These media will be used to develop tone and texture, and enhance drawing skills. Students will be encouraged to experiment with new materials and methods of application throughout the course.
Studying plants is an excellent way of relaxing as well as learning new skills on this enjoyable course. Much pleasure can be derived from close observation of the natural world, as well as the added enhancement derived from the skills in being able to draw and record this.

OUTCOMES
Students will study basic towards more advanced techniques in drawing and painting plants, enhance their skills through practice, and be encouraged to experiment with new materials.

SOME PROGRESSION ROUTES
Possible opportunities may exist to hold an exhibition of student work.
Encouraging students towards planting design, where students with their greater understanding of plants and how they grow may wish to experiment towards designing and implementing planting schemes in the Core gardens, hospital grounds and surrounding environments.
