Core Arts has been awarded for its remarkable creativity, innovation
and dedication by the organisers of the UK’s largest festival of
learning, the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE).
Core Arts was presented with an Opening Doors to Adult Learners Award
as part of Adult Learners’ Week 20th – 26th May 2006.
“A life spent coping with the debilitating symptoms of mental illness,
dependent on a cocktail of medication, with periods spent in psychiatric wards has often
had a devastating effect of members’ ability to function fully within
society. Core supports people who are often seen as unemployable and economically
void to develop skills, unleash potential and feel hope. The evidence of this
is in the lives of people who can now call themselves an artist, poet or musician”.
Rachel Thomson, Senior Campaigns Officer at NIACE, said, “Returning
to learning can be daunting for many adults - particularly for those whose memories
of school make them think their days of education are behind them. But up and down
the country, organisations are providing more and different opportunities
for adults to learn – wherever and whoever they are. The Opening Doors to Adult
Learners awards celebrate truly creative schemes of learning that bring about life-enhancing outcomes for their learners. These inspirational schemes ignite a spark
of enthusiasm that can lead to whole new lives for learners and benefit whole communities.”
Gordon Pursglove, Head of European Social Fund (ESF) Division, at the
Department for Work and Pensions, said, “I am delighted that this is the fifteenth
year European Social Fund money will be used to support Adult Learners’ Week.
I hope that the success of all of this year’s winners will inspire many more people
to develop their true potential.”
The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) is the leading
non-government organisation for lifelong learning and exists to encourage
more and different adults to engage in better quality learning of all
kinds and
campaigns for, and celebrates the achievements of, all adult learners.
