Paul Monks is the first winner of the £10,000 Angela Vivian Award for social entrepreneurs from the RSA and Community Action Network. It is supported by EDS and Microsoft. He was presented with the Award by Andrew Hall, Sales Director, UK Public Sector of EDS, at a reception at the RSA.
Angela Vivian OBE FRSA (1937-2004) was a community champion and the Chair and project director of IT for the Terrified; a group dedicated to helping people overcome their fear of using computers. She was Chair of RSA Wales & the West Committee, a member of Who’s Who of Entrepreneurs and a member of International Business Leaders.
Community Action Network stated, 'the success of Paul's work at Core Arts shows that he has fulfilled the key criteria for the Angela Vivian Award. Core Arts has broken through the 'sticky treacle' of bureaucracy to build a project which meets the pressing needs of a community somewhere in the UK. Core Arts is delivering sustainable benefits for its rolling membership of sufferers of mental ill health.'
Paul was flabbergasted on hearing of his success: "I've never won anything before', he explained, "but this will help to highlight the fact that mental health issues are on the increase in our society and that anyway in which we can help those who suffer to enjoy life more should be supported."
Penny Egan, Executive Director of the RSA, explained that the Angela Vivian Award was set up to commemorate Angela's philosophy and achievements in life. She commented "there is no doubt that Paul is a creator not an adaptor; a leader not a follower; a 'doer' not a 'talker'. I'm sure that Angela would approve."
Well done!
The money will go towards buying the building.
